More than a dive into the fantasy world, J.R.R Tolkien had a good few wise lessons in his book The Lord of the Rings.
For most people, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings is nothing more than a fantasy world which cannot and does not exist. Yet there are some extraordinary lessons of life displayed within the pages of his epic (and even in the screen version).
Here are ten lessons Tolkien teaches us:
- Power is a great tool but everyone wants it and even the best of people can be corrupted by it. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
- Yes, even the smallest people can change the future and the face of this earth. Do not think that because you have no power you are unable to make a difference in the world.
- Never take good friends for granted, or any loved one for that matter. The ones you shun and turn away are often the ones to come to your aid when you are really in a fix.
- True love exceeds the bounds of hardship. If love is good and true, regardless of the difficulties you face, partnerships make the burden that little bit lighter.
- Know thine enemy...know what it is you are fighting. Without becoming paranoid, know that there are good things and bad things on earth and to know what they are helps you to decide how to deal with them. There will always be good and evil, you need to know the difference.
- Never go back on decisions. There are some decisions you make that you cannot turn back on.
- Loyalty. Be loyal to those who are loyal to you.
- Be happy with the small things in your life, because you never know when things will change. Enjoy each day for what it is. Everything happens for a reason.
- Never give up. If there is something worth having, it is worth fighting for and if you give up on something you wanted badly, then you didn't want it badly enough.
- "There are many powers in the world, for good and for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming." - Gandalf (p 214) We are constantly measured, sometimes against seemingly insurmountable odds, but we cannot not try. It is not what you face in life so much as how you face it...that really matters.
These are important lessons, but there are so many more in this beautiful text. It isn't just fantasy, it is real life. Take the plunge and read the book...
