Joey had what her mom called "the gift." It was a
phrase that Joey had never argued with until this night. By the age of nine she
was utilizing her "gift" to the fullest. It was her birthday tonight.
She was a Halloween baby, although her mother said that was why her
"gift" was so prominent, Joey didn't believe that load. At least her
"gift" had always showed her kind spirits or just passive ones.
At age nine she had her great grandmother visit her in the
rose garden. They would sit in the little garden outside Joey's house for most
of the afternoon. They would talk about all those things that Joey loved and
was interested in and then her great grandma would talk about Joey's mom's
health and the strange medicines that she would have her write down. She knew
that they would make her mom better. Joey listened and told her mom. Her mom
believed her even though her great grandmother had passed on two years prior to
the incidents.
Once in awhile she would see someone in the barn window just
passing by, but nothing even close to what she was seeing tonight. It was her
21st birthday, and she was in London.
Everyone was right, it was a fairy tale land of royalty, castles, towers, and the
best shopping she had ever seen.
Fairy tales always seem to have their dark side though and
this town was apparently not exception to the rule. She saw it tonight. It was
about a half hour to midnight and not much of a partier, she stepped out of her
hotel for a walk to reflect on the day and get her body ready for bed. The
lanterns were omitting a soft hazy glow and the famous London fog was slowly rolling in. Reflecting
on the events of the fast paced day, she saw a shape out of the corner of her
eye. She slowly looked over.
Across the street under a London light was a man with his back to her.
She stopped dead in her tracks not wanting the sharp clip of her footsteps to
entice him to turn around. Then Joey noticed the top hat, gloves, and short
cape. It was at that moment she knew she was seeing a vision. Her body relaxed.
Then she noticed his doctor bag in his hand. How odd. She wondered if he was a
famous doctor of some king.
With a start she realized that he had swiftly turned in her
direction. That was no sane man's face. Smart, precise, cold, and insane, she
could feel it before she could see it. He slowly crossed the street before
looking both way for horse and carriages. With that natural gesture of checking
traffic he was not aware. It was as if he was in a trance. At this moment he
started walking faster. She was waiting for him to disappear, but it hadn't
happened yet. She walked backwards into a wall to let him pass until she
realized that he was coming straight for her. She saw the lust in the man's
eyes for blood, precision, power, and the thrill of escape. It was odd the
things you don't notice until the last moment. That is when she saw the cold,
clean scalpel in his other hand.
Her scream felt helpless and abandoned. Her physical eyes
opened and it was gone. She ran to the hotel in absolute hysterics and got
under her covers and kept repeating what her mother said when she was little.
Her mom told her when she was little that if she ever saw something like what
she just saw to keep repeating to herself "It's just a shot of energy in
the dark, a shot of energy in the dark, a shot of energy in the dark…..in the
dark."
"Halloween Spookie Cookies"*
Ingredients: 1 and ¾ cup of graham cracker crumbs, small
candies (like licorice whips and candied cherries to decorate), ¼ a cup of
Splenda, 1/3 cup of sugar, few drops of yellow, red and blue food coloring, 2
tbs of cocoa powder, ½ tsp of vanilla extract, ½ cup of finely ground almonds,
1 and 2/3 cup of confectioners' sugar, 1/3 cup of margarine melted, ½ cup of
margarine softened, and 2 tbs of milk.
1) Mix the cracker crumbs, sugar, Splenda, cocoa and almonds
in a large bowl. Stir in the melted margarine and enough milk to form a stiff
dough. Divide the mixture into about 20 pieces and form into balls the size of walnuts.
Flatten into 1 inch thick rounds.
2) Beat the remaining margarine, confectioners' sugar and
vanilla in a large bowl with an electric mixer at high speed until creamy.
Divide into three bowls. Mix the pale colors for smiley faces and deep blue and
red icing for spooky designs. Spread the icing over the tops of the cookies.
Decorate with candies or candied cherries to resemble eyes and noses.
3) Happy Halloween Eatings!
