There's nothing like French bread. A good one is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. As I was cooking my delicious bread my mind started to wander (as usual). As I am in no relationship at the moment, I got to thinking about how the perfect guy would be like a good French bread.

Although they may be cool and calm on the outside, inside they are soft and sweet. That is why women go for "the bad guys." The reason they do is because every girl is hoping that when they do start dating that cool guy who is rough on the edges that they will turn out sweet for only them. It's what a psychiatrist I knew once called "The Beauty and The Beast Syndrome." Every girl wants to have not just a good affect on a guy, but a fantastical affect on a guy. They trick themselves into believing that the will know it is the right person when that person changes for them.

Take James Bond for instance. That's right, James Bond. When watching "Casino Royale" (the newer version please), half of the girls in the audience fell for him. Let's face it, although Daniel Craig has an interesting personality, it didn't all have to do with her appearance. If you take a look at it is because James Bond is the ultimate in the unattainable emotional involvement. He is not necessarily a good man and the audience still wishes that they could be with him....to change him. Women love this movie, because we get to see his weakness for a woman. In a certain way his love interest really does change him, but in the end he will never get emotionally involved again after what happens. He becomes extremely unattainable at the end and half the audience swoons.

Is that saying something about our society? Yes, it's saying that we want what we shouldn't have, because our spirits are craving something that it can't find. We figure that if we look for everything that we can't find that we will find what we are looking for eventually. This is all subconsciously of course. We all need to find that calm within ourselves and then find a man who is both kind on the outside as well as within. When we find that we will find the man who will be a reflection of our true selves.

If you want hard on the outside and soft within....stick with this French bread:

"My Name Is Bread.....French Bread"*

Ingredients: 1 package active dry yeast, 4 cups all-purpose flour, ½ tbs sugar, ½ tbs Splenda, 1 and ½ cups warm water, 2 tsp salt, and 1 tbs all vegetable shortening melted.

1) Dissolve yeast in ½ cup of the warm water. Add the sugar, Splenda, salt, shortening and the rest of the warm water. Stir until blended. Stir in the flour until smooth. Cover and rise for about one hour.

2) Punch dough down. Turn onto a floured surface and divide in half. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each portion into 10 x 8 rectangles. Roll up starting with the long side. Pinch seam to seal. Sprinkle greased baking sheets with cornmeal. Place loaves seam side down on the prepared pans. Sprinkle tops with cornmeal. Cover the bread and let rise for 45 minutes.

3) Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.

4) With a knife make five diagonal cuts across the top of each loaf. Place a pan with hot water on the oven shelf right below where you are going to put the bread. Then bake the bread for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.

5) Enjoy with a beautiful salad and some delicious butter.
