Dieting, dieting, dieting, everywhere you look today, there is something about dieting. Magazine ads, billboards along highways, television talk show, everyone is communicating about dieting. It is really no surprise since we are a society that is truly focused and consumed by body image and physical looks. There seems to be an over preoccupation with finding the perfect body, while little time is spent helping the mind feel good in its own skin despite the mirror reflection they view. In a perfect world, there would be no stigma placed on how one looked, and more emphasis placed on how we lead our lives. But, we are a society driven by looks, and with that come the non-stop search for the perfect diet; and with that will comes the numerous mistakes made by those dieting.
Let’s go over some of the common mistakes made by those dieting, and hopefully bring a positive awareness to dieters everywhere.
The biggest and common mistake made by people attempting to diet is that they have chosen to diet for all the wrong reasons. You cannot diet successfully because your spouse or significant other, or family member gives you an ultimatum or has a problem with your weight. It must be you, the soon to be dieter, that wants to lose weight, that sees the need to get healthy and fit, and that is aware that their eating habits and fitness habits need to be changed. If you have not come to that realization, then your efforts to diet will be compromised and easily side-tracked causing dieting to become a struggle and battle. You want to conquer your weight, and not have your dieting conquer you.
Choosing an unrealistic dieting goal can set you up for let down, which can in turn set you up for dieting failure. Losing weight is not going to happen overnight, and everyone loses weight at a different rate. So, keep this in mind, set a realistic goal, and choose a realistic diet and exercise routine.
Skipping breakfast or any other meal will not bring you a faster and effective loss of weight. The body needs nutrients and good calories to help keep the system of the body functioning like a well oiled machine. Not eating will have little effect on helping you keep the weight off. You may lose some pounds here and there, but the first time you eat something you will be more prone to binge on foods that are poor quality and stack those starvation pounds back on. Eat quality, healthy, and nutritious foods, while learning to portion them properly so that you are not overeating during each meal.
Rewarding yourself with a weekend off from dieting will only set you back and undo the discipline you have already established with yourself. When you commit to dieting, it has to be a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week commitment in order for it to work. Incorporating healthy eating habits is a definite lifestyle change, and sticking to the diet you have chosen will hinder upon your willingness to commit to making those everyday life changes. After a while, the dieting commitment you have made will become second nature and habitual, meaning you will not have the urge to take a weekend off.
Some dieters believe liquid calories are calories that go in and out of the body quickly. This is a misconception, because they are calories which do get absorbed by the body before any of the liquid composition is put out by the body. The better choice is to incorporate beverages that are low in calories or have no calories at all—grab some fresh fruit instead of the fruit juice.
Keeping with the liquids, many who are dieting do not take in enough water. Adequate hydration with water is essential to keeping the bodily cells and organs functioning. Remember the body is made up of a large percentage of water, and we have a daily needed requirement of 6 to 8 cups of water. This amount should increase slightly for those who are dieting the proper way and including physical activity into their daily routines.
Lastly, dieting alone will not bring you the desired weight loss goal you are seeking, and it will not bring you the bodily shaping you desire. It is important that a person who is dieting also embark on a physical fitness routine to compliment their dieting. Many people start diets without incorporating exercise and their goals are slow and painstakingly met. If they balance dieting with exercise, they will see more results physically in their appearance, than they will with dieting alone.
The process of dieting comes with great stressors to the person that has decided to pursue a journey toward weight loss or just plain learning to eat and live more healthily. The journey will have ups and downs, high points and low points, but the journey, when chosen for the right reasons, will put you on the road to wellness and positive living.
