This little guide will help you understand and use New York City subways.
First of all, if you are not familiar with the state, you
should bring a map of the subways with you. If you don’t have one, you can ask
for one at any subway or you can get one in any public library. Don’t get
tricked into buying one, you can get it for free.
Then once you have your map, take a look at it. Get to know
it and ask the person or place you got it from to explain to you things you don’t
understand.
Then locate your whereabouts and your destination. Once you
have those mark them with a pen or marker.
Take a look at the marks you have made and pay attention to
what trains stop at your destination. Use the key on the map to figure out what
the empty circle means and what the dark filled circle means. That will show
you which trains will stop at your destination and which trains run on that
line, but do not stop at your destination.
Then once you know what train/s stop at your destination,
you need to get yourself a metro card. You can use the machine available in the
train station. It’s not difficult to use it; all you have to do is follow the
instructions on it. It will ask you what language you want to use, then what
kind of metro card you need and how much, etc. very simple.
Once you have your metro card, you need to go to the
turnstile and swipe it once. On the little LCD screen in front of you it will
tell you to go and how much money you have left on your card.
Then once you’re on the inside, you need to look around. Get
to know the subway and then look for the train that will take you to your
destination. As soon as you spot its sign, follow it until you get to the
train. Just make sure you know if you’re going uptown or down town. For
instance, if your in Manhattan
and there are two trains with the same name. One is going uptown and one is
going downtown. If you’re heading to the Bronx from Manhattan,
then you would take the uptown train and if you’re heading to Brooklyn from Manhattan, then you would
take the downtown train.
Once you’re inside the train, pay attention to the conductor
and don’t miss your stop. You can count how many stops it will be from looking
at the map. Enjoy the ride!
