My friends name is Diego, he is a street dog
who decided I needed adoption. Diego is a mix of Sheppard, maybe Chow
and who knows what. At one and half years he is full grown, a big boy.
Now this big boy of mine came looking for a free handout in the way of food
one day, so I gave him a meal. Well if he didn't show up the next day,
this went on for about a week. He would enjoy a meal then head on out.
Soon the rains came to Vallarta. During our raining season
we have some very tropical rains late at night. Safely tucked into my
bed, during a particular heavy rain, I was just dosing off when the
night was loudly pieced with a horrific howling. My God
it sounded like some monster from a bad movie. Up I get to investigate,
there at the door was Diego demanding I let him in. Not impress I sent
him away and got back into bed. Just as sleep was about to overtake me, the same howling started up right outside my bedroom window. If I was to get any sleep I was going to have him stay the night.
In the morning I gave him a meal and sent him on is way. Home from work, tired and hungry there was the dog on my front step. Enough was enough I didn't want a dog, and not one you could put a saddle on. Cleaning up after a dog is one thing, a horse something altogether different. Try as I might, the dog was not going. In the house I went, got the broom and told him to go. He didn't like the broom, so he ate it, burped, and settled down for the night.
I refused to give the dog
a name, he was not staying, he could spend the nights and have a meal
or two but that was it. I'm a busy women, who does not want to come
rushing home to let the dog out. If I meet friends for a movie or dinner I don't want to worry about some dog.
Slowly I came to look for the dog when I would get home, slowly I started to greet the dog with a pet or two, next thing I know the dog
is demanding pets, toys, food, and treats. Ok ,I was fine with that.
Then I noticed a tick, time for the vet. Now this street dog had never been in a car before, I have a little car and a big dog who really was not sure about getting in. It took two of my friends and myself to get the dog into the care. They insisted I had a dog. I keep refusing, I think the word is denial.
Off we go on our adventure to the vet, the first thing he asks is "What is your dogs
name" I explain I don't have a dog, I just wanted some medicine for
this animal. The vet asked if I was going to pay for the medicine, I
said yes. "Well Senora, if you pay for this dog he is yours, it is so simple"
"Welcome to owning a dog China" my friends laughed. First set of shots, and tick free, home we went.
