I have perception problems. I'll be the first to admit that when a car is on the opposite side of the road, I think it's coming straight at me. Dangerous, huh? Not really, because I luckily know how to control it. That being said I was told not to see "Speed Racer." It will give me headaches, everyone said. I'm glad I ignored them. While I was expecting an enjoyable movie, what I got was an incredible piece of art on top of it.

Emile Hirsch plays the part of "Speed Racer" a man who has been driven since he was a little boy to become a car racer. I'm sure it helps that Hirsch looks exactly like "Speed Racer" from the television series, but besides that he does a brilliant job showing his acting chops.  Emile plays the part of an honest family boy without coming off corny and unintelligent. His acting range is stupendous. While you may have seen him in "Into The Wild" as a wandering boy, you will see that when he is "Speed Racer," it is a whole different part but still just as good.

While Hirsch was fantastic, John Goodman was even better. Goodman was the perfect fit for "Pops" the father of Speed Racer. "Pops" is a man who has been a speed car racer mechanic for as long as the film can remember. A family man to the core, he has made some mistakes in the past, but he is ultimately all love. Goodman does a great job of bringing the television series character to life with heart that only a human and not a cartoon could supply.

If there were two words I would use to describe this film they would be "visually stunning." I haven't seen anything like this in a very long time. It reminded me very much of the driving video games I would take part in at Round Table Pizza when I was a little girl. From the beginning you discover that not only do the colors match the television show, but they make it even more vibrant. Along with that is the absolutely stellar visual graphics. You become part of their world and what a world it is. On top of that, you have to realize that the actors had to work off a green screen most of the time in this film. That takes some discipline when there is nothing there to work off of. It's pretty incredible.

On top of all of it is the editing. It is done like a train of thought. You know how when your mind wanders that all sorts of images come to your mind? Well, the editor brings this to the audience in a way which they can understand. While a technique like this can be confusing instead it is enlightening. All you need do is watch the first couple scenes and you will know that of which I talk of.

My brother claims it is one of the best movies of the year. Me, I just like it, a lot. It hit all the right chords with me. Heart felt, thrilling, visually stunning, and enjoyable, it helped me not think about everything going on in the world around me. Whatever you think about it or where it takes you, one thing you'll know is that it will take you for a ride that you've never experienced before.
