Veronica was eating those vanilla butter cream kisses quite slowly. She didn't want to rush any of the bites. After all, they were her favorite cookies and she was an emotional eater. She told herself that if she had to emotionally eat that she would do it nice and slowly so that she'll at least remember it. She only ate these cookies when she was sad. Sad she was.

Mr. Talkly was done with her. Absolutely discarded her. She wasn't even worth his efforts anymore. Veronica had given up everything to be who she was. She couldn't help it. The passion was in her blood. She had to do what she loved or burst. So here she was with not enough rent to pay for this small crappy boarding house, but she was acting (sort of). At least she had been acting a little more than usual because she that part in Mr. Roy's play last month, but that sort of had washed down. There wasn't enough publicity and according to that critic “not enough talent even to be in the motion pictures.” Yes, she was sulking, but she deserved it every once and awhile.

Mr. Talky was going to be her sure ticket to fame. He had everything she needed in a man, too old to notice her faults, attracted to young blonds, enough money to put Goldwyn to shame, and connections that you would not be able to believe. She worked a long time to get him to. He barely had a few days break between each girl before he was on to the next big star project. She caught him by being uncatchable. Once she had her hooks into him that was all it took. He was before her feet in a couple days. Every two strings on his head literally bending down so she could get a good look.

There was other things besides the connections that were really good. She got the nicest clothes that she had ever laid her eyes on and food, which she hadn't had the pleasure of eating in a week. She didn't have enough money for life let alone food, so she just begged it when she could get it until she met him. That is how she got that part in Mr. Roy's play. A two liner maybe but she felt she could make it shine. Shine she did, but if she was the only one then that was the end of that business. Mr. Talky was talking about getting her a huge part in “Nature's Wonderland” (the new hit play), but that was before that little tramp showed up. She had a waistline smaller than a pole and those bedroom eyes. Crap, she really thought she had more time than that. Nonetheless, two weeks later “Nature's Wonderland” went to Barbara Short. She ought to....nothing.

What was she thinking? She didn't need that old fart to get what she wanted. She was the triple threat. She was the best dancer, actor, and singer that she knew. She would just have to show them all. She wasn't Hollywood trash after all. She was made for the stage and she knew it. Give her another few days and Broadway would light up by the mere step of her heels on the pavement. All she had to do..... “Brrrrring.” The phone was ringing. Maybe it was Daddy deciding that he would ignore her heathen ways and send her some money. Yeah right, she laughed and picked up the receiver.

“I told you I don't have the money right now.”

“Is this Misses Rivers whom I'm speaking too?”

“It depends on how much I owe you.”

“No, no, it's nothing like that Misses Rivers. I'm Mr. Goldwyn's secretary and Mr. Goldwyn would like to speak to you about coming down to Hollywood to get a screen test. You would have to leave tomorrow. It was that little play that one of Mr. Goldwyn's employees saw, he thought you might be good material. So how about it?”

As soon as the phone call was done with, Veronica Rivers was ought of that boarding house faster than you could say “Hollywood Trash.” As she threw together his suitcase she reminded herself that trash was for all those others, her she was going to be “Hollywood Treasure.” Yeah, that's it, only the best for her. In time she knew Daddy would see the light, but until then she was going to be the best heathen she could be.

“Vanilla Buttercream Kisses”*

Ingredients: 1 and 2/3 cups of all purpose flour, 3 drops each of red, green and yellow food coloring, ¼ tsp of salt, 2 tbs of fat free milk, 1 cup of softened margarine, 1 and 2/3 cups of confectioners' sugar, ½ cup of sugar, ½ cup of Splenda, 2 large egg yolks lightly beaten, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

  1. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Beat ¾ cup of margarine with the sugar and Splenda in a bowl on medium speed until creamy. Add the milk, vanilla, and egg yolks, beating just until blended. Mix in the dry ingredients to form a smooth dough. Press the dough into a disk. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.

  2. Butter three cookie sheets. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. Use a 2 and ½ inch cookie cutter to cut out the cookies. Cut out the centers from half the cookies using a ½ inch cutter. Gather the dough scraps, re-roll and continue cutting out cookies until all the dough is used. Transfer the cookies to the cookies sheets, placing them ½ inch apart. Bake for about 8 minutes. Transfer to racks and let cool completely.

Beat the margarine in a bowl until creamy. Beat in the confectioners sugar and milk. Divide the filling among three small bowls and add a different color of food coloring to each one. Spread the fillings over the whole cookies and place a ring cookie on the top.

    4) Enjoy the old time deliciousness of the lightly sweetened flavor.
