Becoming a first time parent can be overwhelming and full of an abundance of emotions. From excitement to fear, new parents know they are embarking on one of life’s greatest adventures. So, how can you add a little something extra to their experience?

Most friends and family will purchase gift items for the new baby, and much of that goes into the pre-birth planning. So, much of what the new parents need to care for the baby should already have been supplied and bought. However, it does not hurt to ask the new parents if there is anything they really need to keep baby happy that they have not already received, or if they have registered with a specific department stores baby registry.

But, what about these new parents, do they not deserve something special to help them ease there way into the wonderful world of parenthood? As we all know, bringing a new baby into a home can be extremely draining on new parents, and so when thinking about gifts, we should try to remember that bit of information.

Here are some suggestions for gifts ideas for new parents:

Purchase some groceries. The first few weeks of having a new baby in the home does not always allow new parents to think about the little things, such as grocery shopping. All they think about is feeding times and diapering. Keep the new parents stocked with supplies to take care of them. Plus with the new added expenses that come with a new baby, this will be a thoughtful and appreciated gesture on top of being a gift.

Send over a full course meal delivered from the happy new parent’s favorite restaurant. You can order it to be delivered on a preset day, and then send over a congratulations card with a little message that says, “Don’t worry about dinner on whatever day you arranged.” In fact, if you have a close circle of friends which this new parent couple is part of, you all can arrange a dinner a night for the first week after the baby comes home from the hospital, or a dinner a week for the first month.

Keeping with the theme of the crazy and sometimes stressful adjustment period for the new parents, you can give them a gift certificate for one day of maid service from a local business.

Another good gift is a movie basket. In the basket you can include a gift card to the local movie rental place, and movie snacks. You can give a gift certificate for the new mom and dad to get there hair done and styled at a salon, and then offer your babysitting services so the new parents can “doll-up” and go out to dinner. It’s often very difficult for new parents to grab that “us” time during those early weeks, and you as their friend or family member can help them remember the importance of feeling good about themselves and each other.

So when you are considering gift ideas for new parents, you should think about the adjustment period they will be going through as they get use to their new bundle of joy. This time period is often stressful, and as much as the pre-birth period was thrilling and exciting, the after period is even more emotional. You will want to be sensitive to this, and this can help you be creative in the gift you choose to give the couple.
