Countries have special names for their seat of government where decisions affecting the people are taken on a daily basis. In some countries it is merely called Governement House. In UK, it is No 10 Downing Street, in Nigeria it is Aso Villa while in United States it is referred to as the White House. The race to occupy the White House has started few weeks ago between the Democratic candidate Barack Obama and his Republican counterpart John McCain. The intensity is growing by the day which will culminate in the election in November and see the winner in White House come January 2009.
The recent opinion poll suggests that Obama has a clear lead of 47% compared with McCain's 41% . The support for Obama is said to be growing by day. If opinion poll is anything to go by, and it continues to favour the democratic candidate then Obama may be cruising his way to the White House. The million dollar question is ' Is history going to be made by the election of the first black man as the president of America? Will a black man occupy the White House come January 2009? If he becomes the elected president of America, will Obama change the name of White House?
All things been equal, Obama will become the next president of America. If it happens, he may either change the name of the White House or maintain the status quo. Considering the way he became the democratic candiadate beating his arch rival, Hillary, I do not see an Obama President changing the name. Changing the name will raise a lot of questions especially the racial issue. He may however be under pressure from the black minority to effect the change to reflect the non racial discrimination of the US. The odd in my opinion is against a black man being the president of America. In that case, the time may never be ripe for a black man to occupy the exalted White House.
