I am concerned about race and gender in this upcoming US election. No matter how intellectual we claim we are, we still see the presidential front runners as an old White guy, a young black guy, and a woman. It is great to have this diversity in an election. It is a real historic election.
However, are we really ready for this type of diversity? If Hillary doesn’t win the election, would the blame be placed on “the old white men that are not ready for a woman?” We have already heard this comment from certain celebrities. Even if we don’t agree with her politics, we would be considered as sexist for not voting for her.
The same is true for Obama. If we don’t vote for him it is because America is not ready for a Black President. If we don’t agree with his politics and don’t vote for him, it is because we are racists. If Obama wins the popular vote but loses the democratic convention, I think there could be riots. Obama followers seem very passionate and loyal.
Moreover, John McCain represents the old establishment. If we don’t vote for him it could be considered age discrimination.
No matter how the election turns out, people will be slinging mud. The mud will not be slinging at the participants; but at the voters. Now consider the possible Vice President candidates. This can create a whole new of race and gender question.
John McCain; imagine if John McCain picks Condalesa Rice for VP. She is an extremely smart, experienced, black female. That would shake the campaign up a bit. McCain might pick Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell. It would also be exciting if he picks Congressman Joe Lieberman whom he is friends with and has become an independent after the democrats turned their back on him.
There is rumor going around that Obama might select retired General Colon Powell as VP. Powell has been a moving force in the early Bush administration and this move could win many republican voters.
There has not been much talk about who Hillary Clinton might select. I think it would be interesting if she selected Al Gore. OK maybe I’m being a little sadistic. I just think it would be funny to work for someone husband, lose the presidential bid, and then have to be the VP for you ex bosses’ wife.
No matter who wins, it is going to be interesting. My concern is that for the last 20 years, we have had two families in the White House; the Bushes and the Clintons. It is time for some new ideas. However, we have to remember that the President can not make sweeping changes like these candidate promise, these changes have to pass the House and the Senate to be law.
