Mattel Inc has recalled more than 21 million Chinese made toys due to toxic lead content. New studies are showing that this could still only account for about 2 percent of the toxic toys on the market with only 20 percent of popular toys having no lead content at all. So how do you keep the children in your life safe?
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
Step One
The Consumer Action Guide to Toxic Chemicals in Toys is a list published on the web of toys known to have toxic lead contents. Avoid anything on this list.
Avoid products made in China. This is not to discriminate. Products made in the US, Canada or most of Europe are regulated much more strictly and are less likely to contain high led content.
Step Three
Make note when surfing the web, watching the news or listening to the radio, of any new recalls that might be happening so you are aware of what to avoid. If you have already purchased these products, be sure to send them in for the recall. Do not allow your children to keep them.
Step Four
Get involved. You can support any number of campaigns designed to revise standards and regulate safety inspections for toys entering the country. Many major corporations as well as politicians are already involved in this way.
