More than a religious manuscript, they are the basis of societal functioning.

The Ten Commandments are not just a religious manuscript intent on dominating the world. They are basic yet constant guidelines by which the people on earth should live. Regardless of religious conviction (or lack thereof), the Ten Commandments are the basis of society...really.

Created in order to keep all people safe, happy and organized, there commandments are identified as basic regulations to make sure that all people, in all social ranks are both protected and provided for. Without these guidelines, we have chaos such as we have today. Crimes committed against humanity, deranged acts against other human beings, broken homes, loss of life, loss of property. These are all things that need not happen, but man has lost so much of his spirituality that these things cease to matter.

Social structures rely on norms, values...standards and the more they are degraded, the more rot sets in. It makes no difference whether you believe in God or not (or maybe it does), but respect for other humans is a prerequisite for creating stability and responsibility within any social structure. If Moses' law against adultery was kept, broken homes may not exist. If the law not to murder was cherished, then fewer lives would be lost even in war. Cheating and stealing would not be an issue and neither would domestic abuse.

Okay, so I have to get real. Well the truth is too many people have accepted the way the world is going. If your neighbor meant as much to you as they should, there would be considerably less problems in terms of conflict. Granted, as humans there will be people that we just don't get on with, others that we don't gel with...but basic respect taught to us would say it isn't your prerogative to judge. So maybe that's what I'm doing, forgive me. I am aware that I fall short of these things too, but should that stop us all from trying?

In a world where crimes such as bestiality, child abuse and sexual exploitation run rife, it is up to a few to start changing the world. Could we, would we...be able to try? After all, it is our children that suffer in the end.
