Norton 360 2.0 from Symantec helps save you in situations where other virus protection software fails. Tips for recovering from failed situations are provided for those times when your system protection fails.
Norton 360 2.0 by Symantec is a lifesaver if you work on the internet. It serves to protect your computer from software attacks that come across the internet that can result in the lost of your data, your operating system and require expensive outside support. I wouldn’t risk working on the internet without Norton 360. I’ve used other products, but found that one of the first things that is attacked is your security system. A software security system such as Norton 360 that doesn’t continuously provide updates to your computer and provide updates to the software will leave you without the protection that you pay for. Once installed, Norton 360 works continuously and easily to satisfy your protection needs.
How does Norton 360 Work?
Installation of Norton 360 is easy. You put the software disk into your CD drive and click install. The software downloads to your computer and is saved in a directory. An icon is loaded on your desktop and a run call put into your start up file. This way, Norton 360 starts work immediately on boot up and closes when your shut down your computer. Alternatively, user’s can run the scan manually in the event they received a warning about a security event or if they are accessing potentially insecure data.
Norton 360 offers protection from viruses, spyware, and adware that is downloaded onto your pc, establishes a firewall so that uninvited guests can not use your computer, evaluates your network security for intrusion and breaks including wireless security and scans email for phishing and other attacks. It performs these tasks by maintaining a profile of your system and by periodically scanning the files on your system for known problem data. When attempts are made to put known viruses, worms, adware, spyware, and trojan horse files onto your pc, Norton 360 warns of the file, its location and asks how to handle the file. When it is unable to prevent the file from being put onto your computer, typically in a temporary file location, it provides a pathname so that you can take immediate action.
Best Protection Tips if Phished
I haven’t had any phishing files show up in my bulk file since Norton 360 has been installed. Phishers are looking for your username and password to accounts where you have money or credit. By getting your username and password, they can log onto your system and perform transactions. Alternatively, they are looking for account numbers and expiration data and any of your personal information such as name, address, social security number, phone number, maiden name and other identifying information.
Phishers work by providing a log in screen that looks like a normal log in screen, but after you enter the data and hit return, nothing happens. If this situation arises, immediately change all passwords and call all of your accounts and inform them you have been phished. You normally have time to do this before they can take action because the software is run by an automated routine.
Best Protection Tips if Adware or Spyware is detected
Norton 360 catches some but not all of these. I typically also use Yahoo!’s Antispy software in addition to Norton’s.
Best Protection Tips if a Harmful File is Downloaded
About 99% of the time, Norton 360 protects my system from harmful file downloads. Occasionally, the software has warned me that it wasn’t able to prevent the activity.
If you get the message that a harmful file was downloaded, review the message and get the file name. If you are unable to see the complete filename (sometimes I have the file but not the complete directory name), do a search by clicking start > programs > search, then enter a filename of * and a date for that day and be sure to include system files. Often this is enough to locate the file and delete it.
If the download continues without any action by Norton (something that can occur with new viruses and Trojan horses) you can stop the download really easy by disconnecting your system from the internet. This is more easily done if your computer is not connected to the router. It is worth doing even if your are connected to the router because it can prevent painful reloads of system operating system software. I had to have this done and it cost me over $300 and several days of down time.
If you get pop ups that won’t go away, something that happened using another software product, you may need to reinstall operating system.
Best Protection Tips if a Hacker is identified
You can identify a hacker is on your system when your system runs really slowly. If you find out if another user is on your system by bringing up the Windows Task Manager by simultaneously hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL, then clicking on the Users tab. If you find more than one user on your system and you didn’t expect another one, click the user, then click logoff. If this happens, your system shouldn’t be shown as secure. You might want to reinstall your Norton 360 software. Also, you might want to password protect your files and PC.
